Wasa

The Vasa ("Wasa") was a warship built for King Gustav II Adolphus of Sweden, of the Vasa dynasty, between 1626 and 1628. The ship sank after sailing only one nautical mile on its maiden voyage on Aug. 10, 1628. The Vasa fell into oblivion after the cannons were salvaged in the 17th century. The wreck was located in the late 1950s in the mud of a canal just outside Stockholm Harbor. The hull, whole and largely intact, was refloated on April 24, 1961 and stored in a temporary building called Wasavarvet ("Vasa Shipyard") until 1987, when it was transferred to a new building, the Vasa Museum in Stockholm. The ship is one of Sweden's most popular attractions. The Vasa had 64 guns spread over two decks and was 62 m long, 11.50 m wide and 50 m high. The ship was built for a crew of 435 and weighed 1,200 tons.
