The Royal Louis was the first of a series of six first-rank ships of the French Royal Navy. It served as the flagship of the Levant fleet based in Toulon. She was built at the Toulon shipyard between 1666 and 1670 under the direction of Rodolphe Gédéon, a builder recruited by Colbert in Holland as a “master carpenter maintained for the manufacture, construction and conversion of His Majesty ”. It was a three-deck ship with a crew of 800 and later served as the flagship of the French fleet in the Mediterranean. The ship was to serve as an affirmation of the glory of the young Louis XIV.
